no topspin on forehand

Postby Van » Sat Jun 20, 2009 8:43 pm

While teaching the forehand today, I had a student who really wanted to hit topsin but always hit the ball flat. I tried all the usual teaching methods: windshield wiper against the backboard, touch the ball and follow through over the shoulder, etc. The technique that worked was one on Oscar's DVD where you have them touch the ground with the tip of the racquet before swinging. The student began hitting topspin, and the began hitting the ball harder. This made her very happy. Me too.

When I taught students to use topspin this was usually a favorite of mine. I used to show it to even advanced students and get usually instant results (tough to not hit up on the ball when the racquet is on the ground).

Thanks for sharing!

I place a ball 3 feet on the ground from the net. I then have the student try his way of driving the ball over the net. Of course they cant. Then I show them the shot with a windshied wiper , no problem. You will also discover how to hit a iron off of the fairways.

Wow! Those are great methods to use! I usually tell them to keep their palm down through their swing.
